FAQ's

My candle wick wont light, why?

If your candle wick has been buried in wax, it will be quite hard to light. Do not panic as all you need to do is melt some wax. This can be achieved by using a hair dryer. Place it directly over the wax and hold it there for 10-15 seconds. Once the top layer of wax is completely melted, you can pick out your wick by using a butter knife or fork. As soon as your wick is upright it will be ready to light.

What causes a candle to smoke?

A candle that is made correctly with 100% soy wax should virtually produce no smoke when lit. If the wick becomes too long and an air current disturbs the flame, small particles of soot will escape from the flame. Always ensure to trim your wick to a quarter of an inch before you re light your candle to prevent soot from occurring. Always keep your candles away from drafts and air conditioners.

Why does my candle look frosted?

Using Natural Soy Wax can create a frosted look in your candle. This is completely normal due to a drastic drop in temperature. Frosting does not effect the burn quality of candles. We try to minimise frosting by adding a few drops of Natural Coconut Oil and pouring the wax at a lower temperature, during colder seasons. Be mindful that temperature shifts can also create frosting, for example, a candle that has been placed in a hot delivery van and then placed in a cool (air-conditioned) room can affect the look of your candle i.e. frosting.

 What is Mushrooming?

Once a candle has burnt for a long period of time, there is a chance that ‘mushrooming’ could occur at the end of the wick. Mushrooming arises from a buildup of carbon. It is common that once the carbon falls into the wax pool, an unpleasant odour is released. Try and avoid ‘mushrooming’ by trimming your wick once your candle has burnt, before re lighting.

What is Tunnelling ?

Tunneling in a candle can occur for many reasons. The most common reason is due to a candle not been burnt correctly. It is important to allow for the candle to burn long enough so that the wax can melt across the entire candle. If you blow the wick out before the wax has completely melted, an indentation will occur in the wax. To avoid tunneling from occurring, it is suggested to burn your candle for at least 1 hour.

You can also prevent tunneling by following these steps:

  1. Scoop out the un melted wax that is around the jar by using a butter knife or spoon. This will ensure that the flame melts the wax evenly.
  2. You can use a hair dryer to melt the excess wax on the sides to create an even surface, resulting in a clean burn.

What is the difference between candles made from paraffin wax and soy wax?

Paraffin wax is a petroleum by-product and contains a high temperature burn, while, soy wax candles contain a lower burn temperature. Natural Soy Wax is a vegetable oil that is derived from soybean, and does not contain anything artificial. It is 100% natural and has zero toxins.

Can I reuse my candle jar?

YES!!! We all know the feeling of finding a beautiful candle jar that compliments your home in every way. The fabulous thing about candles, is that you can indeed re-use the jar.

How can I clean out my old candle jar?

You can clean out your used candle jar by placing it into your freezer overnight. The next day, remove the candle jar from the freezer and use a butter knife to gently scrape out the remaining  wax from the bottom. This should allow for the wick to pop straight out. To clean out the jar, you can simply add some coconut oil to a dry cloth. This will create a new shine to the jar, ready for use again.
